About Tom O'neill

Tom began taking pictures at age 12 with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera. His dream from then on was to learn everything he could concerning photography.

He realized that taking pictures was a trial and error process, with quality photographs showing up only now and then. His desire for bigger clearer prints led Tom to realize that you cant enlarge small negatives and still have a quality end product.

A photograph, "The Monolist" by Ansel Adams seen in Oakland in 1956 marked the beginning of his quest for fine cameras and lenses. A Rollicord Twin Reflex with a Schnider lens was Toms first good camera. Since then, he has owned Leica, Contax, Pentax, Marniya, Cannon and Wista. He is currently using an 8x10 Deardorf.

The quality of his photographs is enhanced through careful film processing and printing using Archival matting and UV protection on all of his prints.

For the past 35 years, Tom has photographed the Calaveras/Alpine County areas. Hes taken many trips into the high country, south of Sonora Pass and down into the MokelumneCanyon. With the help of some "good ol friends" he is able to lug the 8x10 camera and gear into remote areas of the Sierra and record scenes not available from more easily accessible areas.

Toms philosophy is: "Why not take photographs that are so spectacular they make you want to hang them on your walls?" His pictures indeed, bring the wonder of the outside inside.

Enjoy!!
